The European or oriental-language
sections, which were created in 1992, address the need for European and
international openness in French schools. In September 2006, 182 ,000 pupils
were attending about 4, 000 such sections in lower secondary schools, general
and technological upper secondary schools and vocational upper secondary schools.
Pupil numbers are increasing constantly.

The European sections enable pupils who have met the requisite conditions to have "European section" or "Oriental-language section" specified in French, alongside details of the language concerned, on their baccalauréat diplomas (see reference texts).
Much thought and study have been conducted with regard to the European or oriental-language sections: official reports and seminars, notably for the tenth anniversary of the European sections.
The contributions made by the various may be viewed players here: questions and answers.
To encourage the sharing of opinions and experience by those concerned, an exchange area has been made available.
